Conflict in Syria ~ from 2016
"The conflict in Syria has been described as not merely a civil war but 'one theatre in a dangerous regional struggle'," North & South states on Page 51 of its current issue. I suggest that the war is more accurately described as a US-NATO attack on Syria, using (allegedly "moderate") terrorist groups as proxy forces (and roughly following the modus operandi established in Libya in 2011 during the overthrow of the Gaddafi regime). As Wikileaks has revealed, the United States has been actively scheming to destabilize Syria since 2006. (See https://wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/06DAMASCUS5399_a.html) Washington's antipathy to the Syrian regime stems from the fact that Syria is the last remaining advocate for a secular, progressive, Arab nationalist-governed Middle East and the linchpin of the "arc of resistance" to US-Israeli hegemony. Notably, Syria rejected plans for a Qatar-Saudi-Syria-Turkey-EU gas pipeline in favor of an Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline. Such disobedience never goes unpunished by the Empire. Syria's destruction, and its replacement by a patchwork quilt of confessional statelets, also fits in perfectly with the objectives of Israel's Yinon plan of 1982.
